Is it safe to pour lukewarm water onto an iced-over car windshield to de-ice it?

Much easier than scraping it off and quicker than using the car defroster, but concerned I could crack the windshield. Water is barely above room temperature.

Update:

I'm talking about the really nasty ice layers that form sometimes. Sometimes it will take 20-30 minutes for the car defroster to work before I can even begin scraping.

Run the car for 5 minutes. The car is warm, the windshield is clear, and there are no cracks.

If this happens a lot then get a little cover for the windshield. You can purchase them at automotive stores. You put it on the windshield. It is held in place by the doors and the wipers. When you come out you simply remove it, shake off the snow and ice and throw it in the trunk for the next use.

The water likely won't crack your window but you will end up with more ice to clean.

It gets as cold as Minus 35-45 F degrees where I live. Even the coldest water will crack a windshield at those temperatures.

Besides, warm water will cool very quickly and just add to the ice on the window anyway.

There is a possibility that the glass will crack, depends on the temp of the glass and the temp of the water...too big of a difference and the glass will expand faster than the glass can handle(thermal shock) and crack it does not matter if the glass is tempered or not. While it may be more resistant to cracking it will shatter if the temp differential is great enough.

I very sure that windshield glass is not tempered glass but laminated glass.

You can buy a spray can of something that melts, or at least loosens, the ice quickly. This makes it possible to scrape without waiting for the car to get warm.

you will NOT crack the glass, it is tempered and made of a special glass that is not all glass, it will not crack.

do what ever makes it easiest to get your vision back and you on the road!

but you may just ICE it up worse...sort of like sticking your tongue to a frozen pole. dig?
