what is the meaning of "paid at pump"?

I see credit cards mentioning about - Rewards are for transactions classified as "paid at pump"? Does it refer to paying money to the pump attendant and not paying inside? How about swiping at the machine?

These are cards that have some sort of deal worked out with a particular vendor or group of vendors. They give you credit for you using the card, the vendor gives the card company credit. It does not work on purchases inside the store. It is only for gasoline purchases.

Yes, it could refer to pump attendants, but in states where there are no attendants, it could mean gasoline pumps that accept credit cards and don't require you to enter the store.

Where do you live that still has attendants? Yes, it means paying at the pump with their debit/credit swiper.
