Is laminate flooring hard to keep clean?

I am considering installing laminate flooring in my dining/living room. People tell me it is hard to keep clean? Is this true? I take care of a two and one-year old grandkids.

The best thing about laminate flooring, besides looking nice of course, is that it is made to look good for years with MINIMUM EFFORT.

All you really need for cleaning laminate are a vacuum cleaner, a dry mop, a damp towel and a little common sense. If you really hate vacuuming you can use an old fashioned broom or dust mop instead. After removing grit and dust you can damp mop the floor using one of the many cleaning products on the market that are especially formulated for wood or laminate floors. The best part is that you don’t have to polish, wax, or scour your laminate flooring to make it look good.

Dirt and rocks can cause visible scratching that will eventually lead to dullness. To protect against this vacuum, sweep or dust mop the floors on a regular basis. Also use floor mats or entry door mats. The other alternative is having everyone remove their shoes when they come in, --that behavior is for white carpeting and real hardwood flooring. We want things to be a little more relaxed so that we don’t have to go ballistic every time the dog crumbles her chewy bones on the floor.

One of the selling points is that laminate flooring is easy to keep clean. In theory, yes the surface structure of laminate allows it to be cleaned easily. However, it's not considered the most durable or long last flooring. I would suggest looking into other flooring solutions, especially if you have kids to care for. I would consider maybe vinyl, or if you want to spend a little extra cork flooring. If you do decided to go with laminate flooring below is an excellent resource on ways to clean it.

Laminate is different from hard wood. You do not want to leave water too long on a laminate floor, or the finish will buckle. Make your own floor cleaner by mixing equal parts of rubbing alcohol, water, and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray and wipe up small sections of the floor at a time. The alcohol will help the water evaporate.

Usually it is very easy to keep clean. However there are various qualities of laminate. A cheap one might discolor easy. Textured will hide dust and has to be vacuumed. Some are better than others.

It is more durable than any flooring except vinyl. The better quality laminates can withstand harder impacts without scratching than any hardwood. And they won't discolor in the next decade like hardwood definitely will.

It is EASY to keep clean.

We have PERGO laminate and three kids under the age of 7.

In terms of resale, buyers would like hardwood or tile over laminate.

it is very easy. I just use Clorox ready mopping system. Just press the button on the handle and then mop the floor with the special dust mop. Just replace the wipe when it get dirty. It is so much faster than vacuum.

i tried windex and then dry mop it. It will make the floor sticky so don't try it
