Has anyone had bad reactions to the diabetes drug Metformin 500mg?
Hello all, I hope all are well.
I have been recently diagnosed with diabetes taking Metformin 500mg twice a day. For the past few days, the drug has made me crash and itch to high heaven.
When I take it, it has a euphoric feeling kind of like you're mellow when you're on painkillers. Then I crash hard, so much so that I have to lay down. Then there is the itch and the constant nausea. I stopped taking them last night and I feel better. I am going to consult my physician tomorrow.
I just want to know what others have experienced with this drug and if anyone has had a bad reaction to this drug and what they did about it when consulting their physician?
Thank all of you that answer in advance.

If you are lactose intolerant, then it would affect you. And as the answerer said, it helps some people and not others.
It is very intelligent of you to trace the problem and stop taking it. I do hope the next medication is right for you.
I am taking Metformin 500mg, twice a day for the last 5 months, as apposed to 250mg thrice a day since i was diagnosed in 2001,
Take care

the first night I took metformin I was really unwell, diarhhea, nausea, vomitting, pain and tingling in my arms and legs and an overall jittery feeling... I ended up going to the ER because I was so worried anyways my doc reduced my dose tp 250mg 3 times a day which caused a bit of diarhhea for a few days and I get nausea if I take it without eating, all is ok now but my levels are still high so I will need to increase my dose soon :)

I am new to taking metformin as well, but to have reactions like that, particularly the itching, at such a low dose indicates to me that you may be allergic to something in the med. My doc said the reason why they start everybody on Metformin is that it has the fewest side effects. Anything else has more. However, if you are having that reaction, I can't see you staying on it.

Hello, how are you? My husband used to take Metformin but it made him bloat really bad and have gas and diarrhea, it also gave him a nasty metallic taste in his mouth. He is now on Glimeperide and he has had much fewer side effects from this one. Everyone has different side effects but it sounds like you are having a really bad reaction. Ask you doctor about other options, and maybe ask about Glimeperide it's pronounced Glim mep per ride.) I hope this helps.

Hey, I understand the situation you are going through when trying to Cure Diabetes. My friend was in the same situation as you are now, nothing worked for him until he came accros a Cure for Diabetes program. He is had a great success with it. Maybe this is something which could be right for you.
Have a good luck
