Have you ever read your camera's User's Manual?

Never?

Cover to cover?

Looked at the pictures?

Only to solve a problem?

I know, this is more of a "Poll", but I am specifically interested in Camera Manuals (or CDs or On-Line).

If so inclined, please give brand and what you thought of manuals info. Me? I'm a cover-to-cover guy, and impressed with Canon manuals.

Cover to cover...and then a good supplemental book on the camera as well.

Every camera I have gotten, I have sat down with the camera AND the manual and read the manual cover to cover trying everything that was discussed.

I keep the manuals together, so if I have a question, I can reference them.

And yes, I think Canon does a nice job.

Have you ever read your camera's User's Manual? Yes.

    Never? No.

    Cover to cover? Yes.

    Looked at the pictures? Yes.

Only to solve a problem? Yes.

All camera manuals are useful (if dry). Sometimes they have errors in them (I have canon manuals that have errors in them - very annoying), but overall they are useful, regardless of the brand.

I carry a "magic lantern" guide to my D40 when shooting. Its kinda like an expanded manual with examples and techniques.

I started on film cameras when I was in my early teens, and after a year, when i was 14 I got my D40. I knew how to use it in manual mode, but learning where all the buttons were, and seeing what each function does, I had to read the manual. So I did.

as for Film cameras, I was taught, Pretty straightforward since they don't have settings, memory banks, buttons, and whatnot

Since I have already been used to film SLRs, I pretty much know my way around dSLRs. Only when I can't pin down a certain non-standard feature that I go into the manual so yes, "Only to solve a problem" would be my case. That doesn't mean I don't love my camera manuals.

I have looked at the pictures and opened the manual to solve a problem, but no not cover to cover.

Nah, I leave my manuals in the plastic wrap, so my resale value won't drop. Sometimes I download the PDFs, All cameras are very similar, so reading the manual is not necessary.

I thumb through every page and read up on the stuff that's new to me if it's relevant (like on camera editing - I'll skip that junk). I'll repeat this process every so often to refresh my memory on some of the features. I also have the PDF version so I can search for items of interest.

That's the first thing I do, with *any* product that comes with a manual, regardless of whether or not I have previous experience with similar products or not. That way, I don't have to ask stupid questions like the ones here on YA.
