Snow Driving: Why do people stay in the ruts?

Every time it snows, whomever is the first to go out driving creates a tire track trail, that everyone else behind him tends to stick to. If everyone made an effort to drive ten inches to the right of or left of the original tracks, the roads would be less hazardous. If everyone drives within the same tire ruts, it creates a tramline effect, making the roads a lot more dangerous.

So what is the deal? Are people lemmings? Do they mistakenly believe, traction is somehow better on the ice than on the snow?

Most people are stupid lemmings, although real lemmings have been proven to not follow the leader to their deaths. However most people assume the road when covered with snow has hidden dangers and by going that 10 inches off the path could spin them out, or they'd run over some partially buried dangers. As a truck owner I would drive on the edges of the ruts to expand them so the lanes would be more passable.

If people drive off the ruts then their going to compact the snow creating more ruts and flatten the snow and create a even bigger block of ice. Traction is crap period because it's snow and ice, good luck getting traction.

And maybe because people don't want to use their cars as a snow plows. I don't know what's underneath that snow and don't want to find out. A block of ice that fell from some semi could still pop my tire or damage my radiator. If I had a big 4x4 then maybe i would, be I'm rocking a Ford Focus, so screw that.

I was driving on a road where everyone else was driving in the same lane, and in the ruts, but I wanted to pass someone, so I had to use the other lane, which had no ruts (until I drove there). Traction was worse there. Traction had been better in the ruts of my original lane than in the lane without ruts. On the other hand, because I had the lane to myself, I could skid a little without hitting anyone.

Bloomin' idiots, I say. It's like they all forget how to drive in the snow every flippin' year it returns. Makes me crazy too. And yes, it's like the blind leading the blind (no offense to anyone who is blind either). Because people are like little robots and can't or don't think for themselves.

Because getting out of the ruts can kill you.
