Why are plasma TVs only available...?

Why is it that that plasma TVs are only made in sizes above 40"? Their picture is so much better than LCDs or LED/LCDs. I have a 42" Panasonic in my living room & love it. I'd like to get a new TV for the bedroom, but can only fit a 32" max size in there.

The reason is cost. It costs more to manufacture a plasma display and the demand for them is less. Less demand equals lower production volume which also contributes to a higher cost for each unit. Thus they are far less popular with retailers, so size for size they will be priced lower. In addition LCD TV technology has improved greatly over the past 5 years. Also the LCD screens are cheaper to manufacture. Thus manufacturers, wholesalers and retail outlets have a wider profit margin. You will see them advertising LCD sets more because of that. LCD displays have improved enough over the last few years that they can be made in larger sizes. Initially they were relegated to small screens. As the manufacturing technology improved so did the screen size. The public has been made to think that LCD sets are superior to plasma sets. They are in some ways such as power consumption , weighing less (an advantage in lower shipping costs) and the displays are thinner than plasma sets. You are correct in believing that plasma sets have a better picture. The picture is inherently better because the screen is made differently. No back-lighting is required as with all LCD screens. An LCD set cannot produce the range of contrast that a plasma TV can. The claimed contrast ratios for LCD sets are pure marketing fiction. Black on a plasma set can be represented by zero light output on each pixel. Thus in low light areas they will always have better blacks, detail and color.

from my reading before buying my Plasmas it was said "technical difficulty in getting pixels to work in smaller screens"....something along those lines. LCD's are also good as long as they are 120htz or 240htz now. I love the clarity and color of the plasma better than a LCD, and games look bright all the time.

@tyler...where did you read this, they said this about 4 years ago but we still have Plasmas?

It doesn't really matter, the government is discontinuing their production because of their energy consumption, that's why you can buy the remaining ones so cheap.
