would sharks be drawn to women in the water when it is "that time of the month"?

Will you be attracted the a sandwich when you walk into a gas station? If you are hungry, maybe, if you are full, maybe not.

Blood attracts sharks because it is a sign that food is nearby. That time of the month does create blood that can be smelled from outside the body just like a cut on someone's arm or leg. A tampon does not change this because it is not a plug with a seal. That is like suggesting that wrapping a flesh would in gauze will keep the shark from smelling you.

Also, it is a myth that sharks are drawn to humans to begin with. Generally sharks attack humans because they believe they are seals or sea lions. If they are hungry and they smell blood, they may not be thinking clearly to begin with.

I was on a shark dive in Roatan in 2005 where there were 20+ reef sharks swimming around/among our group. A friend of mine was having her period at the time and the sharks showed no interest in her (or any other diver).

No, period blood and regular blood are different. Sharks aren't attracted to period blood because it is high in iron content
