One could argue that they were bound to be defeated and they minimized casualties and damage by not puting up much of a fuss. Of course, they did not gain the glory that England did by fighting back.

The 1,397,800 dead and 4,266,000 wounded in the Great War, the effect of strong defensive fortifications on attackers (also from the Great War) and possible the mutiny of her army in 1917 after the Nivelle offensive.
After 1918 the French decided on a strong border defence to keep Germany out culminating in the Maginot Line. It should be noted that the Maginot line was held without any trouble, the only problem was that it did not extend far enough to the North and when Hitler waltzed into the Rhineland there wasn't enough time or money to extend it.
Also she was expecting a repeat of the Schlieffen Plan of 1914 which involved swinging through Belgium and Luxembourg, the Ardennes forest was thought to be impassable to armour and essentially the French army's defence was snapped at the junction of it's parts which culminated in the withdrawal at Dunkirk (some French were rescued) and then a pause on the Somme.
The tanks were in penny packets distributed evenly because WWI experience had shown the Allies that they were slow and unreliable and best used to support infantry and artillery in an attack compared to the German Panzers which were always en masse
