Should TMA and MMA have their own sub-section here under Martial Arts?
There continues to be arguments and constant debate over these two and I wonder how everyone feels about them being separated.
Both under the Sports>Martial Arts, but go one further and make a Martial Arts>Mixed, and Martial Arts>Traditional. Both area's questions would be seen under the Martial Arts tab but everyone can have their own respective corners.
Would everyone be more happy? Would you more happy? It would hopefully prevent such disrespectful questions that have been ignorantly asked recently. Do you suppose it would?
@John Doe: So if you want to talk to someone it's fine, but no one can talk to you? Why don't you man up and enable messaging? Choosing to hide behind a faceless avatar is cowardice.
@Callsignfuzzy: True I haven't done much to quell the debate, but who has? Those who think they're going to settle it end up unleashing something completely new. This question isn't trying to insult anyone. I'm not sure where you got that from. Expecting the worse from me now?
I find it remarkable at how some unknown and unproven person such as John Doe can come here, ask a question about getting thumbs down because one if his answers p*ssed a bunch of people off, and turn this place up side down. Silly, isn't it?

I don't think they should separate. Like previously said, people new to martial arts wouldn't get as broad of answers. Also it would limit any MMA fan with a brain to be stuck and surrounded by ignorant retards like John Doe.
I'm a fan of MMA but I try to be respectful of other traditional martial arts. As long as people try to have a mutual respect then both MMA and TMA should be able to easily answer together. Plus for any question I would ask in the MMA section, I wouldn't get any answers from experienced traditional martial artists whose opinions I value.

Hi there
Not really MMA should have its own section under sports. Its actually in the wrong catagory. I could go on and on about what constitutes budo, koryu, TMA, MMA etc etc. But that would just piss even more people off. Some people just seem to think that if theres a kick or a punch involved then its a martial art?
Certain arts attract certain types! Certain arts require a different mentality than others! There i said it! And this is where the problem lies. Sports also attract fans! Or should that be fanatics? Fans are not sportsmen or martial artists for that matter and much of them are children which brings further problems! Stick MMA under sports. Boxing lives there! Wrestling lives there and so should MMA!
Best wishes

There should be a separate section, but it wouldn't stop the stupidity. People will still post in the wrong section/. You will still get ignorant questions and responses. Also I would take it one step further. TMA would be removed from the sports section all together. It would be under self defense. It is not a sport.
Reading your additional details I must now go and read what others have said.

In fairness, you've done nothing to quell the debate by asking questions like, "What does MMA have that TMA doesn't" and so on. Just saying it seems unfair to criticize something you've been a willing party to.
But no, I don't think there should be different sections. Martial arts covers a broad spectrum. If someone asks what martial art they should do in order to defend themselves and get into shape, a number of people would recommend MMA and/or many of the systems associated with it (Muay Thai, boxing, BJJ...) That oppinion is just as justified as anyone who recommends Krav Maga, karate, Bujinkan Taijutsu, Jeet Kune Do, or Wing Chun. MMA is part of the martial arts community. Questions about the lastest UFC are just as legit as questions relating to self-defense, belt promotion, musical kata, and everything else.
Yeah, there are times I come on here and want to pull my hair out, if I had any. But then I remember that though this is a community, it's not one that really effects me. I come here to exchange ideas and share my views. If I want to be loved and admired, no disrespect to anyone intended, but I've got real life for that. Frankly, I think there's a number of people on here to take YA way too seriously. And that's a problem for them, not the admins.
Edit: "This question isn't trying to insult anyone. I'm not sure where you got that from."
Please read again. I DON'T think you're trying to insult anyone. You are, however, clearly criticizing what in your words are "arguments and constant debate".

I don't think so J. I believe that, martial art should have a space NOT in the sports section at all. After all it is not a sport. We play no games, and there is no prize other than life itself, and those huge childish egos are subdued. Also nothing I teach is very sporting, nor could it be called fair.
This won't happen, because of the sport being mislabeled Martial art. MMA, and martial art are so far separated there is barely a resemblance, yet the children who have never had a real confrontation without judges and referees think that the limited sport aspect is the real deal. Martial art needs a real section of it's own, and MMA belongs in 'sports'. Just my 2 cents.

i think there needs to be a gymnastic section.
they wont split this section up. it is one of the smallest sections. last year the questions there were about 800 questions open now its down to 300. if any thing section is dieing
lucky there is very few people that are truly ignorant like the aforementioned. those type of people never trains nor care about the truth regardless of what you tell them. the will never be more then children

This has been asked about as much as "What is the most effective martial art" no offense. I must have answered this one 6 or 7 times. BUT I agree with you.

Nope, I think that somebody new looking into martial arts will only get answers from MMA guys or TMA guys and will only get biased information.
Debate is good!

No,
It wouldn't stop the disrespectful questions. It will just make us/them easier to target for people who wish to seek this avenue of discussion/harassment as it sometimes is.

When I first came here looking to see if there was a martial arts Q&A, I looked in the Arts Section hoping to find it there.
I was saddened to see it in the sport section.
