Limited Practice/Ice Time...What can I do?

I'm a figure skater who has recently switched from group lessons to private lessons. Well, since I've been taking private lessons, I've been stuck on the same thing for like 5 lessons in a row. The worst thing is it is a basic move: Forward Crossovers!!! My coach decided to go over everything I learned so far and work on touching them up. It's just I haven't even gotten to show her my spins or jumps or spirals, because I formed some bad habits with my forwards crossovers. To make things worst, I only get about half an hour after my lesson (the time left over in the freestyle session) to practice because we live like 45 min. away from the rink and my parents don't like driving me (I only get to skate once a week). I do exercises and workouts which help for other parts of my skating, but is there any possible way I could practice my crossovers? (I've been doing them off-ice, but it hasn't been helping because it is a completely different feeling). Any tips on fixing them ? I really don't want to keep wasting money for lessons and get taught the same thing every week! Thank You! :)

Try not to get frustrated with your coach. She's doing the right thing by you by not moving you on until you've got your crossovers down pat. Forward crossovers are one of the most fundamental building blocks that you can have.

Is there a bus or train you could catch? A rink buddy who you could carpool with? I think by the sounds of things it's time you sat your parents down and had a good long discussion with them about where you're going with your skating. Because only going once a week, you're not going to really get better in a hurry. You need time to practice.

You can practice at home or anywhere you want off ice. The trick to crossovers cans be not only the misplacement of your weight but you could be standing straight up (legs stiff) instead of bending your knees.

At home stand with your feet together then start crossing right over left, right over left, right over left in a straight line. Then go the other way with left over right, left over right, left over right. For front crossovers make sure you are crossing in front not behind.

As silly as this may sound, once you get on the ice you will definitely start noticing the difference and will be able to move forward in your lesson.

    1. You aren't wasting your money on lessons with this coach.

Forward crossovers, backward crossovers, all basic jumps, and basic spins are the foundation of your skating. With out them you will have crap double and triple jumps and crap advanced spins.

I worked on single jumps and basic stuff like crossovers and three turns for FOUR YEARS before my coach (a two time national and world competitor) would let me do doubles and triples. Without a strong base you have nothing. Do you want to be one of those girls that has doubles that barely gets off the ice or one of the girls that gets four feet off the ice? I hope you choose the latter. Don't complain about lessons being cheap. Between coaching competitions skates and dresses you'll spend thousands of dollars. My coach alone is 73$ for only 45 minutes.

Something that is desperate but also a good idea is making your own rink in your yard if it is big enough. I am doing that right now b/c I also have a long drive to the rink. It is not a huge project, but does require some time (I'm speaking of the trad. way with snow and water, not with a tarp and boards) and dedication which it sounds like you have. I also am struggling with crossovers. They are one of those elements that you can ALWAYS improve.
