Shared custody - Child sick - what should the parents do?

Let's assume the standard custody situation, where either mom has custody & dad gets EOWE/School holiday visitation -or- parents have shared custody but child's primary residence is with mom & dad's parenting time is EOWE/School Holidays. Child has own bed & bedroom at dad's house.

Child is sick. It's time for dad to pick child up.

What should the parents do? Is this different from what parents that you know actually do, usually, in this situation?

FYI - this is just a survey-type question... My stepdaughter's all grown up now. I'm just involved in a conversation about this on another website.

And, yes, I asked this a few days ago, in a different Y!A category. I'm just looking for more input on the topic, wondering if I'm way off base in my idea of how this usually works out in the real world.

I'm experienced here! well, in my situation it is a little tough because I have 2 new little children with my new wife. In the past, without question I would pick up my son and care for him if he was sick and it was my visitation without hesitation. After my little ones did end up catching colds, I will allow his mother to offer to keep him. If she does, then I generally will let her but that's only to keep my other kids from getting sick. Not because I think she's a better parent or can take care of him any better than I can.

If the child is sick then you need a doctor's note that states the child is too sick to be taken out of the home and then you and dad work out an alternative time once the child is well. For example he can have the child for the week after the child gets better if he makes sure they get to school and picked up and then the original custody goes back in play. If that presents an argument then you take it back to court about what to do when the child is sick.

This is one of those cases where the child's needs trump the legal paperwork.

Depends on the severity of the illness and the mother's plans. If the child is very sick, leave her where she is. Moving her would just make her more miserable. If mom needs to go somewhere, perhaps dad can stay with the child at mom's house while mom does what she needs to do.

the father is a parent and can handle a sick child . . .

women love to keep their kids from their father so I can see them doing out of revenge - but saying is for the childs sake . . . .

however, I didn't have a room at my dad's and I'd stay home if I were sick when I was growing up . . .

The mother should have taken the child to the hospital in the first place. But since she did not, the father should take the child to the hospital.

Unless you're talking about very, very small children, I'd suggest just asking the child what he prefers.

come together for the sake of the child.
