How much do you tip a tattoo artist?

This artist is in a very well known shop in a large California city. He is not the owner of the shop. His hourly rate is $180. The shop is well respected and almost surgically clean. Let's say I love the tattoo [fingers crossed], how much/what percent should I tip?

He's charging you a lot of money for his work. Most people don't tip, but a twenty spot is nice from time to time. Sometimes we get a tasty snack. I got some homemade cheesecake last week. But we're not like waitresses, who live off of our tips. You don't tip percentage with tattoo artists. We know full well how expensive ink is in the first place.

I have 5 tattoos and I always tip.. 3 of mine cost between $180 and $220 and I have $50 for those 3. My 2 smaller ones I tipped $20. I don't think a lot of people tip their tattoo artists though because even though I go to the same guy every time he seems shocked and always asks if I'm sure about my tip. Just use your judgment if you want to tip. It's completely up to you.

I usually base it off how happy I am with the final piece.

If it is someone you always go to I suggest basing it off how much time and effort they put into it.

As with my last tattoo I have been going to this guy for a few years. He spent 3 hours and on his day off none the less so I tipped him well.

I say anywhere from 20-30 dollars is always a good tip :]

I like to give my tattoo artists gifts because sometimes I cannot afford to tip them.
