What to do about broken tooth?

Broke one of my back teeth last night while eating a toffee. Not a massive amouth of damage i dont think, just one of the quarters broke away pretty much level with my gum.

It didn't hurt a single bit, and still doesn't, but has left a very sharp edge. I was told that I can't get emergency treatment because I'm not in pain, and that I'd have to go on a waiting list to register with a NHS dentist. My registration appointment is 2 weeks away, the first appointment they had available, and one where they dont actually do anything anyway.

This is a real pain in the *** in itself, as I'm due a baby a couple of days after this appointment!!! So basicallly, I'm not going to be able to get anything done until a few weeks after baby is here, I don't think I'll be up for dental surgery right away!!!

Is there anything I can do or get to remove the sharp edge, or an alternative to waiting weeks to get it seen to??

go to a different dentist and tell them its an emergency. Just because your not in pain your situation with your baby has importance. This doctor doesnt give a crap about you. Almost every denist has a little time spot they can fit someone in and if they see its really impotant they can call and reschedual for someone else. My dentist did this for me once when the treatment took longer than expected. Yes it sucks for the other person but they didnt mind too much their problem wasnt an emergency.

If you have insurance, go to the ER and if it is infected they can at least give you a prescription for the strongest available to help to fight the infection, which will help get rid of some of the pain. Then you can still keep the appointment with your dentist on Tuesday and he can handle the situation from there. I have had a broken tooth for more than two years and now it is abscess, so get it taken care of as soon as possible. It will only get worse, so get it taken care of. Good luck!

You should phone the NHS walk-in centre before 8am, and they will see you in a few hours on the day.

They do have the emergency dental repair kits at Savers for about £3-79, or there abouts

Maybe you should consider going private for this treatment only. It will be expensive, however you need to offset the expense against the discomfort of putting up with a sharp edge constantly poking against your tongue.

Also, next time tell them you ARE in pain.

EDIT: @greengo, the question mentions the NHS - this is the UK not the USA.

There should be an emergency dentist within yoyr area who can see to you,and your condition should bounce you to the top of any queue ! They could put a temporary cap on it,unlil you are ready for your appointment.

I am surprised. Most dentists would see you the next day. What state do you live in? I suggest calling a different dentist, your dentist seems too busy to care!
