The dog needs a job. When my friends ACD is not out doing herding trials or herding in general, she is either doing conformation, guarding the property, or running alongside the horses when they ride down the road. (Note: they live in a rural part of England).

I would suggest you find something to make that dog seem useful, there is too much pent up energy. Even adding more mental stimulation to the dogs day will help. Does your dog like to tug on things? Look into spring poles, this is great exercise for dogs that have lots of energy to burn. I plan on making one for my dogs one of these days. Doing agility seems to be a great way for herding dog owners that are not interested in herding to curb a herding dogs energy. Just need to find something that works for you.

Cheap solution? Not sure what you mean by that.

A properly exercised ACD with a job to do every day will not be digging in your yard or jumping the fence. If you cannot supply the above things, find an ACD rescue in your area and surrender the dog to them.

I agree that you'll probably need to kennel (or crate) train your dog. That breed of dog is innately predisposed to dig and probably won't ever get where he'll be content in a back yard especially all by himself. These dogs aren't really disobedient, in fact they're fairly easy to train. You might consider working with your pup on agility training. They're generally high spirited and truly joyful when they're accomplishing things.

What you have is an Australian Cattle Dog. I see that you live in Florida. There is a sheepdog trainer who trains all breeds, so you can get your dog started on livestock. Here is her info: Sherry Lee at lindensheepdogs@peoplepc.com. Her phone is 407 892-8437. This will be the cure for all of your dog's problems.

You will have to get the dog into a kennel with a concrete bottom. All dogs love to dig.

  • Proper exercise and training.
