Football question. Why does the ball make a whistle sound (not a nerf)? see below?

I was having a catch with my buddy. Everytime he threw me the ball it sounded like one of those nerf balls coming at me but it was a regulation size ball. I couldn't get my passes to do that. Is he throwing it harder or something? Putting more spin on it? I don't get it.

Update:

Boooooooo!!!! Skswigga, weak.

Actually, each time your friend caught the ball, he quickly implanted an explosive device. The whistling you heard was actually from the fuse of that device. Luckily for you, he couldn't time the fuse right and you guys stopped playing.. I would call the police on him.
