Can a debt collector release the last 4 digits of my social security number legally?

A debt collector recently called and asked for me by name. I confirmed my name (first and last), she then asked if XXXX was the last 4 of my social security number. (I did NOT offer the numbers to her- she released them). Is this illegal?

Update:

She said the numbers. She did not ask for them, she gave them to me.

The last four numbers are no good to anyone and do not open you up for fraud or identity theft. Nothing illegal was done by her asking you to verify the numbers she had.

No one can do anything with only the last 4. They asked for you by name first, and you indicated that it was you. You have nothing.

The 4 digits by themselves are totally useless. She was merely checking you were genuinely the person she wanted to talk to.

    Asking them is not releasing

Yes, it is legal. Claiming that you are someone that you are not is illegal.
