My laptop battery dies instantly if I try to watch a video?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600. I've had a few issues with the AC adapter in the past (it had a stripped wire, so it would only work occasionally, and when it did, the battery would sometimes not hold a charge, or only charge when the computer was turned off) and today I got a replacement charger. When I got everything all plugged in, the battery charged up just fine. And when I unplugged the charger, just to check and see if everything worked properly, the battery kept a charge and said that I had about 2 hours of charge left. Less than five minutes later, I tried to watch a YouTube video, and my 'Low Battery' warning came on almost instantly, and then the computer died.

I'm smart enough to assume that it's internet/processor usage that killed the battery, and not the video itself.

But still....what the hell is going on?

Update:

The battery seems to hold a charge just fine until I do something that requires a lot of processing power (or at least, this seems to be the case).

So, if anyone else answers that 'the battery can't hold a charge', please explain WHY it's still holding a charge.

How old is the battery? They stop holding a charge after awhile so it might be time for a new one.

Your battery has stopped holding a charge. You'll need to have it replaced. Either that or don't unplug the A/C adapter. Considering the fact that your laptop is a few years old, doing almost anything online now is going to drain your battery faster than it did when you first got it. Any new software you install on your laptop is going to require more processing power and that will directly drain your battery faster because your processor now has to work harder to run newer programs. The same concept happens online with certain sites who may for example upload videos in HD. Unfortunately there is little you can do about this unless you upgrade your laptop or buy a new one.
