When do babies learn to avoid falling?

The twins are now entering the 'self propelled' stage and it seems like they are determined to take nose dives off the couch, bed, changing table etc.

Is there any way for me to teach a baby to avoid falling off of things or is this something the pick up on their own?

In Psychology we learn that this is a natural instinct most babies have to avoid steep falls. If you want to help them avoid such things keep an eye on them and before they go to the edge of an object make a scary face. Usually IF they trust their caregiver, they will stop and wait until you tell them it's OK by smiling and encouraging them to continue forward.

Sometimes, however, babies just don't all come with those instincts. I had a nephew-in-law that at the age of 2 1/2 climbed out of a low window and ran straight forward off the edge of the roof. Broke his collar bone. In that case you may want to start putting up child fences and gates, around stairs or other large drop offs. I would not put them on the counter, you might try changing them on a sofa, or the floor instead.

Don't leave them unsupervised while on a high place. There's warnings on some of these things....
