How do you achieve a black background in a photo?

A white background is easy, creating a little light box for example with sides cut out covered with white tissue to produce soft light. How do you do the equivalent but for a sheer black background?

Low key lighting is the answer. drop your F-Stop till all, or almost all, ambient light won't be picked up. Keep your shutter quick and use a flash to light the subject quickly without illuminating the background.

Get some black velvet from a fabric store. As long as your lighting doesn't pick up the fabric's sheen, it will be pure black (except for the little bits of dust and animal hair that the fabric acts like a magnet for!)
