Madero and his followers were the only upperclass politicians of the time who resisted Porfirio Diaz. After Diaz was deposed however, Madero failed to replace the leadership with revolutionary supporters and the Porfirista military quickly took the revolution into a violent downward spiral.
Bottom line, he was the last potential leader replacement in a chaotic political climate.
