Is it theoretically possible to construct a light sabre?

Sci-fi has given us many interesting ideas, some have become reality. From Star Trek's automatic sliding doors (now seen in shops) to personal communicators or as we call them cell phones. A lot of other concepts such as genetic engineering, matter trannsportation, and phased partical weaponry are in their infant experimentation stage. Other concepts such as faster than light travel work in theory, but we do not have the technology to make them reality. So in theory do we have any idea on how to construct a fully functioning Star Wars light sabre? This should inclued adjustment facilities for blade length and blade power intensity.

Not given the "rules" of physics that we know right now. The problem is actually making a "blade" out of light ... we have no way of making light bend back on itself to form a blade. If you can figure out how to make light bend back on itself then you have a chance but then there's the power supply and heat problems ... in the end there really is no way to make a lightsabre that works like the ones in the movies.

A few years back there was talk of using super heated plasma but the temperatures for it to do what a light saber would are incredibly difficult to achieve.

    yes it is.

since it has already being use in surgery.
