Yes, Gmail works well with Linux. You should understand that Google has dumped MS Windows and uses Linux as the Majority along with Mac http://www.ditii.com/2010/06/01/google-switching-o... . So it would only make sense to make sure that their Email service works with the OS that they prefer.
Tell your friend to get Thunderbird and setup a POP or IMAP account.

Gmail works on Linux. There is a client on the software center on Ubuntu Linux, or you can use Gmail on the internet.

well that dont matter cuz you gmail is via the browser, and linux have alot of very well working browsers like any other OS and its just to go to the gmail site and tada, gmail.
