Can you restore windows after failed hard drive?
With more manufacturers not including Windows 7 installation disk, but putting the restore files in cabinet files on the drive, if your hard drive fails can you download windows7 and then use your product key or are you just screwed.
Thanks
Christine

You are advised to make a copy of your Windows operating system when you first set up your computer. The manufacturers haven't included System Recovery Installation Discs with their computers for years. The DVD System Recovery Discs that you make will have the operating system and all pertinent information ( drivers ) needed in case the hard drive would fail. All that is necessary at that time is to replace the hard drive and re-install the operating system by using the set of System Recovery Discs. Making this set of System Recovery Discs and backing up your personal files at regular intervals will assure you very little lost time in case of a hard drive failure. The reason for making a set of System Recovery Discs right away, is so there are no viruses on the hard drive that would be copied right along with the System Recovery Discs. On my Vista operating system, it takes 3 DVDs to complete the set of System Recovery Discs. You can download a borrowed copy of Windows 7 to put on the new hard drive, but it must be the exact version of the operating system you had installed. It's not worth the hassle! It took me about an hour to make my set of System Recovery Discs. You can probably still buy the set of System Recovery Discs from you manufacturer, but it's cheaper to make your own. Here's a link that instructs you in creating a set of System Recovery Discs. Good luck!

You can normally order restoration disks from the manufacturer, for a nominal fee, of course.
There are a few situations where the C: drive portion of the disk can fail but the restore partition is still readable and can be recovered. That's an unusual situation, however. A good, regular backup is ALWAYS the right thing to have.

It's an OEM version of Windows so you're screwed if the drive actually fails... you'll have to cough up a few $$$ more to get actual restore CDs from the manufacturer.
Best to make system recovery DVDs when the system first arrives ;)

The restore disc, obviously, is just for restoring Windows in case of corruption. Some places offer to provide you with the operating system for a price added on to the purchase of the computer.
If you don't have the OS disc, you're going to have to buy it since your hard drive is dead.
I do agree that it sucks because you can't reformat or do much of anything if you don't have the disc.

Best bet is to check the manufacturer's web site and see if they offer a recovery disk for your computer.
Some do for a low cost, much better than paying for a new Windows 7 install disk.

It would be helpful to format the drive and reinstall Windows. If you don't have a backup for critical files, call ACE Data Recovery lab. They can create an image of your hdd and retrieve all files you need.

Hi Christine,
You should just be able to use your same product key.
