Please, how can I help my dog get around better?

I have an 11 year old australian shepherd mix, a spayed female. She seems to have trouble getting around lately. Years ago, a vet told me to give my german shepherd aspirin after he had been hit by a car, but not badly hurt, just sore. I thought I could do the same for my australian shepherd, but after giving her baby aspirin, she throws up. I can't afford to take her to the vet right now, but I want to help her with (what seems like) arthritis.

Please don't give her any drug - unless a vet specifically tells you to.

And these days if a vet tells you to use baby aspirin, run the other way. There are far better remedies than that, and any vet who still is using aspirin needs to retire.

Eleven isn't that old for an Aussie - I think if you can, it would be a good time to schedule a vet check soon. There may well be something elsegoing on that you can help.

In the meantime, unless hse has ever had pancreatitis, she should be able to have a fish oil capsule each day - the omega-3's are powerful anti-inflammatories, and in addition, strengthen the cell walls, keeping out infection. One a day, and you may see an improvement in about a week or two. It's the same fish oil capsule as for humans, and you can get them cheap at the supermarket or drug store. The 500 or 1000mg are fine - but just one a day.

Make sure she does get up, and take her out to the mail box or for a short walk up the driveway several times a day - the trick is not to let her just lay around. If her muscles aren't at all fit, they won't support the joints.

Several small meals per day may be better for her than one or two bigger ones - split them up.

But do get her to the vet as soon as you can manage it - I hope she improves a bit for you.

Try buffered aspirin. The buffer helps the stomach upset some. One should be about right for a aust. shepard as long as she is not under 30 lbs. Also, try giving on a full stomach. It's better to use Rimadyl but that's a costly one. Aspirin is better than nothing.

Our aussie/dobbie mix developed spurs on her spine at 14. She had trouble getting around and at first the vet chalked it up to arthritis from advancing age. Latter x rays showed the spurs.

She was given a buffered adult asprin 1 time a day, usually at night since the stiffness was worse for her in the mornings. Its available in pet stores and almost any walmart, grocer or pharmacy under many names, We used Ecotrin since Bufferin didnt seem to work as well for her.

Your vet could give you a RX for other medications such as Rimadyl. Personally I avoid that one like the plague. There have been two class action law suits against its makers for side effects including death. Toxicity is frequent with that medication. http://www.srdogs.com/Pages/rimadylfr.html .
