  • Yikes! Need cake mix help fast!?

I need to make a cake at the last minute - the recipe (on the back of the box!) calls for 1/2 cup of oil - all I have is olive oil. But I do have some butter-flavored crisco in the sticks. Can I use that satisfactorily? Has anyone ever substituted solid shortening for oil? Help!!! (I live too far out of town to go get oil - and I don't know if the olive oil taste will be too strong.)

  • My UU church is having a passover seder meal & I need a recipe, please.?

I know I can look on the internet, but I prefer hearing from real people! I signed up to bring "chicken soup" to serve 12 for this meal. Some of the recipes I have found appear very elaborate, some very simple. Anyone have a recipe I can prefer, take to the meal, and serve from a crock pot? Thanks very much!

  • Question about truffles?

I want to try truffles or at least truffle oil. Because they are so expensive, I want to make something spectacular. I am very curious about the taste. Anyone have a simple idea for using truffles (or the oil). I really don't know where to buy any - I guess off the internet?

  • Hushpuppies with cornbread mix?

Has anyone ever made hushpuppies using a pouch of cornbread mix (calls for some milk and an egg)? How did you alter the ingredients and/or the amounts called for on the package? Thanks and 10 pts for the best and quickest - I've got to get these done for dinner!

  • Some ideas, please, for some good soup for tonight?

I have some chicken breast and lots of fresh basil. Noodles, rice, and all sorts of other things, but I know I want to make some chicken soup using basil. I usually just make pesto, so I'm not sure about cooking with the basil to get all the flavor I can out of it. Any ideas? Ten point after dinner tonight!

  • Any mature returned Peace Corps volunteers out there?

My husband and I (ages 59 and 54) will retire as educators in a couple of years. He has taught at every grade level, regular and special education, and has experience working with emotionally disturbed boys. I am a social worker and counselor - experience in mental health, education, public health, child welfare. Both with master's degrees. We are considering applying for the Peace Corps. Anyone out there volunteered as a couple? Our age? Know any blogs we can go to for more discussion? Thanks in advance.

  • Please help me with my 'new' washing machine!?

I just bought a used Maytag Neptune washer. It came from a repairman, not the person who had used it. It works great, and we paid very little for it. I have never had a front loader before and it doesn't seem to hold many clothes. I am going to look up the manual online, but I wonder if anyone out there has one and can tell me how it compares to their previous top-loader (size of load-wise). Thanks!

  • Please, how can I help my dog get around better?

I have an 11 year old australian shepherd mix, a spayed female. She seems to have trouble getting around lately. Years ago, a vet told me to give my german shepherd aspirin after he had been hit by a car, but not badly hurt, just sore. I thought I could do the same for my australian shepherd, but after giving her baby aspirin, she throws up. I can't afford to take her to the vet right now, but I want to help her with (what seems like) arthritis.

  • I am naive. Am I being scammed?

I put an ad on craigslist for a room to rent. I have gotten several emails from people (all women) who say they are currently living in other places (countries and states) but are relocating to the area where the house is. They are offering to send me a deposit by mail, not to my bank. They are giving me LOTS of details about themselves. The companies they work for are real, at least I can find them on the internet. How could they benefit from this, if it's a scam? I would never give any info about my bank, etc. Is this just to humor otherwise bored people??

  • Help me brighten up our snowy existence with sweet rice & mango recipe!?

I have some Thai cookbooks, but nothing about the sweet rice and mango we get at a local Thai place. I have coconut milk in a can, rice, and mango, but I'm sure there's more to it than that. Can you help me, please? I know I could look it up on the internet, but this is more fun! Stay warm everyone......

  • All of the sudden, I'm wondering if rice in only used for cooking after it is dried?

Surely it doesn't grow hard and dry?! What is it like when it's harvested and why can't you buy it 'fresh' if you live near where it grows?

  • Anyone ever put potato peels down the garbage disposer?!?

I did & have to share the great solution I got after calling the company....I couldn't believe it, but tried this and it worked like a charm. I knew not to put the peels down there, but stupidly did it anyway. Chicken bones! I got a roasted chicken at the store, we had it for dinner, then stuffed the bones down and ran the disposer. Clear in minutes. I just had to share this with everyone.

  • Thanks for all the answers!?

My recipe is 8 oz flour, 2 t baking powder, 1 t salt, 1/3 C shortening, 1/2 C milk. I don't use a crock pot for these. I toll them out in the morning, cover with a tea towel, dry all day, cut and drop in boiling stock. I will try the yeast recipe. Thanks, thanks, thanks.
