Thinking of buying an Alfa Romeo 156, 12 valve car?

Its done 42000 miles, its a 1.6. 2002.. Do you think this is an economical car? Do you have one? Do you like it?

Thanks in advance xxx

It isn't a 12 valve-the 1.6 is a four cylinder engine, so it'd be a 16 valve. The 1.6 engine isn't the best one, I found it to be a bit under powered, and not 'Alfa' enough; it sounds like a plain old Fiat engine. The 156 isn't a light car, so in your shoes I would be more inclined to go for the 1.8, which is a good balance of performance and economy.

PS, if you do decide to go for the 1.6, if the car is one of the Selespeed semi automatics, DO NOT BUY IT. They have a 100% failure rate, and even a recall failed to solve the problems with that gearbox. Repairs are very expensive, so do yourself a favour and stick to the manual gearboxes. I've had three 156s and they were all great; none of them ever let me down, and they were brilliant to drive.
