Help with wet and dry dog food?

Since my dog doesn't like to eat dry food a lot, I mixed some wet food with the dry food, hoping that she'll eat it more. It turns out she only licks off the wet food and ignores the dry food. How can I get her to eat both?? Should I just stop giving her dry food and have her eat wet food all the time?

Stop giving her wet food. If she doesn't eat the dry food, you're giving her wet food, right? So you're basically telling her that if she ignores the stuff she doesn't want, the better stuff will come soon. Try to find a dry dog food she likes, but you need to make sure it has the proper nutrients for her age/breed/size. Because she is so picky, never give her table scraps, it will be harder for you to get her to eat her own food. Give her strictly her dry dog food. If she is uninterested in it, try again later. Take her for long walks; exercise will increase her appetite. If she still is uninterested in the dry food, I suggest taking her to the vet to get her teeth checked.

My dog used to be very picky about his dry food, I started taking a Bouillon cube, mixing it in water, and mixing that with the dry food to make it taste better. Over time I used less and less of the mixture, and now he accepts the dry food plain. We can even give him real meat as a treat once in a while, but never near a meal time. =)

As a rule, Dry food is better for the dog. It is better for the dog's digestion & makes the poops much firmer & less smelly (therefore easier to clear up) - or as a compromise, give a mixture of 75% dry & 25% wet. Just make sure you always leave fresh water for the dog to drink. I'm concerned when you state: "the lady that is getting ready to give the dog to us is feeding Pedigree and I won't feed that when he comes home. He's 9 weeks." It is VERY IMPORTANT that you keep feeding the same food as the puppy has already been eating , for at least a few weeks, to allow the pup to settle in, and so you can take notice of the state of his poop (frequency, solidity, colour, smell), before you even consider changing the food. Bringing a new dog home for the first time is very stressful for the dog (being away from his mother & into a strange new house with strange new people & strange new smells), and you really want to keep any changes to a minimum, until the dog is settled. After a few weeks, you can then start to GRADUALLY change to a different brand of food Day 1> Start by just putting 10% new food to 90% old food. Day 2> Add 20% new food to 80% old food Day 3 Add 30-40% new to 60% old until after 7-10 days, you have gradually changed over to using 100% new food. * keep an eye on the state of his poop during this time. If the consistency & colour & smell of his poop changes too much, go back to the previous day's ratio and keep that ratio for a few days.

  • Wet dog food is very bad for dog's teeth, the other answerer needs to find a new vet who ISNT a crackpot.

Wet food cakes on their teeth and causes tarter buildup, where as dry food crunches and 'scrapes' the teeth, its actually better for them.

Lol, there have been studies down, wet food is hands down not as good for them,

Put your dog on a high quality food that is tasty. A healthy dog will not starve themselves when food it avaliable.

you can try the "musher's method" to make it more palatable. Soak the kibble in warm water and give it mushy like that :D

giving her wet food all the time isn't bad, my dog was the same way, he would spit out the dry, and only eat the canned. some people say that canned will be bad for your dogs teeth, i asked my vet about this and she said that it isn't true

Put down the food. If she doesn't eat in 20 minutes, take it away.

Repeat at the next meal time.

    NO dog will starve themselves.
