RCMP Constables--Commissioned Officer title?

I'm a American yank who was watching a 90's show called "Due South" where RCMP Police Constable Fraser calls his commanding officer, Inspector Thatcher, a woman, "Sir". Do RCMP constables call female superiors "Sir" or "Ma'am/Madam"?

Update:

I do not base my opinion of the RCMP on the TV; I highly respect the mounties and their service to the Crown and the people of Canada! And their red dress uniform, So hot!

That TV show was one long, continuous laugh, with so many "inside jokes " that I'm still having fun with the reruns on late night tv.

The Inspector, even though she was a woman, would be adressed as Mam, or more usually "inspector ( insert last name here ). The use of rank is dependant on who you are, and who you are adressing, and where. If you work with a senior officer every day, in the office, you would use their rank in conversation, such as " Did you see the Leafs game last night, Inspector ?

If on the other hand, you are in a public place, or in a courtroom, it would be "Inspector Watson told me to lock up the office that night ".

If you used to be of equal rank, both Sgts at one time, and the other person has been promoted to Staff Sgt, it will be " Where do you want this report filed , Staff ?".

Usually a Inspector is the officer in charge of a detachment, in a small town. the boss. In a larger place that rank is a mid level manager/ supervisor, with at least two or three more ranks above it, in the manpower structure. The senior RCMP officer in a Province is a deputy Commissioner, who reports directly to the Commissioner, in Ottawa, who reports to the Prime Minister and the Attorney General, and to Cabinet.

Ever wonder why the wolf on Due South was called " Diefenbaker " ?

John Diefenbaker was one of our most eccentric past Prime Ministers, who had a really stiff and gruff personaity, and who was quite deaf. The wolf was also deaf, but could read lips. See what i mean about "inside jokes ". ?

Ever see the one about Fraser's dad and his ghost ? The actor who played that part was Gordon Pinsent, the grand old man of Canadian actors. Another guy who was in a few episodes recently died. He has a star on BOTH the American and Canadian "walk of fame ". Famous for his whoppe cushion jokes on set. His Father really WAS a RCMP officer, in real life and his brother was Deputy Prime Minister in the 1980's. Who was he ? Naked Gun and Airport ? I can't think of his name right now . I got it........Leslie Neilson !!

Did you know that Paul Gross is a classical actor, doing Shakespear at the Stratford Festival every year ? Did you see his WW1 film , about the Canadians at Paschendale ? great film, and his own grandfather fought there, with the Calgary Highlanders, in 1917, as did my Father.

Special Constables are unpaid, part-time volunteers, usually used for large events; football matches, rock concerts, etc. Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) are paid employees. They have been introduced by the Government to try to fool the public into thinking that they are as effective a presence on the street as Police Officers, and are saving the public money as they are apparently cheaper than Police Officers. However, PCSOs have no power of arrest and are not trained in the theory and enforcement of the law are Police Officers are. They are there to make the Government look as if they're investing in law enforcement, but the money spent on them would be far better spent recruiting, training and - most importantly - retaining and rewarding the existing Police Officers.
