Actually, some of the objects are indeed military. The SR-71, the F-117, and much more recently the RQ-170 sentinel have most assuredly generated sightings, and may well be responsible for morphing the public image of the "UFO" from a flying saucer to a menacing black triangle.

Many sightings in the area are far more prosaic, though. One night, on a ridge outside of Area 51, I watched a light slip sideways through the sky, then drop straight down. The general consensus among the "UFO experts" present was that it was some fantastic bit of technology engaged in impossible manuevers. The reality of it, though, is that it was the nosewheel light of a 737-200, probably operated by one of the contractors who ferries personnel to and from the base. It turned on approach to orient itself towards the runway, and began to descend into Groom Lake; night obscured the changing range of the object, and the UFO enthusiasts did the rest with their imagination.

If they can turn a 737-200 into that, just imagine what their little minds could have done with an RQ-170.

The primary purpose of Area 51 is to support development and testing of experimental aircraft and weapons systems. The intense secrecy surrounding the base, the very existence of which the U.S. government barely acknowledges, has made it the frequent subject of conspiracy theories and a central component to unidentified flying object (UFO) folklore.

Do I think UFO get flown by the military? Well, if they're flying an experimental craft that somebody on the ground can't identify, then for that person it's a UFO. Since the military know what they're flying, for them it's not a UFO.

Please understand that UFO doesn't not automatically mean an alien spacecraft. A UFO is an identified flying object. It could be a paper lantern, a rocket, a bird, an atmospheric phenomenon, or simply an optical illusion.

What is people's fascination with conspiracy theories, especially about UFOs? Why not spend your time learning about reality?! It's far more interesting and amazing than any conspiracy theory could ever be (even if it was true!).

    Get over it. Conspiracy theory.
