VHS to MPEG clarity issue?

Recently I upgraded to a flat screen TV. The first thing I noticed was that if I played my VHS tapes via tape player that the picture was not as sharp as it was with my old style TV. I have used roxio to convert many of my old tapes to DVD in an mpeg format but the picture still lacks the clarity that I used to have. Anyone know how to get a better picture?

Only thought would be if you used a S-VHS tape player to play the VHS tapes and then convert them at a higher Rez we used a ADVC-300 to convert the Tapes and they almost look SD quality it has to do with something Canopus does with the video in the converter when we imported it. We did this with only the really good VHS tapes we wanted the best quality possible the other we used Up-converting.

There might be a chance you could use an Up-conversion DVD Payer when we had to jump to HD I thought of all the older DVDs I had some just a year old so I read about Up-conversion that was a lot of DVD Player. Samsung made one of the best ones and there was on the lower end Toshiba so we bought both of them.

Each of them has a different playback that makes one better than the other yet they both play great I like the Pebble (Samsung calls it that) for really good videos and the Toshiba does a play through even better I am able to hook up a SVHS tape player and get it to playback even better.

We bought the SVHS player on Craigslist as its a JVC for $15 it used to cost over $200 it plays great and works as a play through to the Toshiba to the TV.

Your conversion may have been poor. You must make sure the mpeg is at the highest bit rate or quality setting.

There are other ways to convert VHS to DVD as well. See the source below for more info on the process.
