What to look for in a sewing machine?
I'm expecting my second child, and I would like to sew some of my own baby slings, and maybe use it for other simple things like a baby blanket or repairing my husbands ripped jeans, etc.
The problem is I have practically zero sewing experience and have no idea what to look for when shopping for one. I sewed a "pot belly" pillow-type thing in home economics in 6th or 7th grade and thats the exent of my experience.
What type of machine should I look for? And how much is this type of machine going to cost?

are my recommendations of what to look for in a machine that can take a beginner through almost all garment sewing and most home dec projects.

Older machines are usually the best. They are solidly built, have good quality machinery inside, and don't have digital and electronical doo-dads that can break and that you'll never use. The fewer the options there are, the less there is to go wrong.
I'd go with a used machine from the classifieds or a sewing machine store, made in the 70s-80s.
Janome, Elna, Singer, etc.
