Insurance settlement question re: salvage company. I've been asked to ship 2 hard drives and a laptop.?
I can't get any of these 3 items to power up. My fear is that personal info remains on the drives that might be recoverable by someone with expertise in this area. How should I handle this?

You have no options. Either protect the information by destroying the hard drives, or claim the insurance and mail them back.

You can erase the data on the hard drives by exposing them to a very powerful magnet or carrying them through an active degaussing loop.
Any data stored in EPROM or other non-magnetic memory will survive.
