The most famous cluster of old kingdoms in the East African interior is that of the Interlacustrine region (encompassing southern and western Uganda, Rwanda, and adjacent countries). Lying between the Western Rift Valley with its line of lakes (Tanganyika northward to Albert) and Lake Victoria on the east, this Interlacustrine zone comprises both fertile agricultural land, for dense banana cultivation as well as grains, and fine grasslands for cattle.
