Is being fined for a misdemeanor the same as being convicted?

A little over 5 years ago, I was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia--a misdemeanor. I went up in front of a judge, plead guilty and was fined. I paid the fine, and that was the end of it.

When a job application has the question "Have you ever been convicted of a misdemeanor?" and I answer "no", am I lying?

Update:

I was just wondering if it's still considered a conviction when there was no jail time or probation involved.

Update 2:

Also, I haven't touched illegal drugs in years, so drug testing is not a problem for me.

    yes..

Source(s): I am a retired police officer. I retired as a sergeant, after 29 years, from a very large department, about 12,000 officers. I was a patrol officer for 4 years in a very diverse area. I was a tactical officer in the high rise project areas of my city. We called it vertical patrol in that we walked the the stairways of the high rises most of the time. I did that for 5 years and was promoted by test to detective. I worked violent crime (homicide, sex, officer involved shootings, robbery, kidnapping, serious non property incidents) for 11 years until I was promoted to sergeant. I worked as a street supervisor, a bicycle patrol supervisor and a desk sergeant/watch commander. During my time as a tactical officer and a detective I was a unit representative for the police union. I have a B.A in English and an M.S. in Law Enforcement Administration..

Most places even Casey's General Stores to make donuts at 2am does background checks on people. An employer already will know why you were arrested and shouldn't be asking you, They also do drug test and some places do random drug test to see if your taking them. With 20 million out of work and things not looking good until we get a new President in 12 I would be very careful at work since just a puff of a weed will stay in your blood stream for 6 weeks that could be detected.

Yes, a conviction does not have to involve jail or probation.

    A guilty plea = convicted.
