What is the best way to learn about your heritage and geneology? is Ancestory.com a good source?
Any information on how much Ancestry.com cost, and how far back in history it is able to locate your genealogy would be appreciated. If it is not a good means of learning more of your family tree then what other recources would you recommend?

I have a subscription to Ancestry and I have been very happy with it.
How far you will get with your tree is one of those 'how long is a piece of string' type question, if your ancestor was a laborer called Smith without two cents to rub together you might find the trail goes cold pretty quickly, if however you are related to Lord Snootington your job will be much easier.
Ancestry is adding new records all the time too, so you never know when some new helpful bit of information might show up.
What you don't want to do is get on Ancestry and copy a load of information off everyone else's trees, although some are very accurate and well researched some people's tree look like a mad woman's breakfast, it's far safer (and more fun) to do all your own research.
A free site that is worth checking out is www.familysearch.org

What Is The Best Way To Learn About Your Heritage And Geneology?

The best way to learn about your heritage is to get to know your aging relatives before it's too late. They are the ones who have the real stories to tell.
Ancestry.com is wonderful if you use it correctly. I've had a subscription for 10 years and I love it. It saves me time and money and I couldn't be happier. It's also put me in contact with distant relatives and we've worked together to solve problems, exchanged photos, and exchanged stories.
Like another poster mentioned, don't take every family tree at their word. Not everyone is scrupulous or thorough in their research. You can't "graft" a branch on your family tree over night without careful consideration of the researcher's methods.

You have to be careful not to believe all of the family trees others have assembled. People can be mistaken. Their grammar can be abysmal, too. Just because you "see it in the computer" doesn't mean it is true. The source records they have, particularly the census, are wonderful. The "Public Trees" range from the carefully researched to the ridiculous. Anything prior to 1850, the first year they asked white people the names of everyone in the household (1870 for blacks), is mildly suspicious. Anything prior to 1600, roughly, is almost always speculation.

To answer your questions directly First you should do your research at home. Starting with yourself and progressing back through your parents and Grandparents recording as much information as possible. Then I would suggest using Familysearch.org, (it is free and give access to the largest database available) or you could use a Family History Center near you. They are also free and open to the public, The Centers have access to numerous premium (subscriptions) sites. I no longer use Ancestry much because I have found more information on Familysearch. The most impressive was a picture of my Grandparents Marriage Certificate, which is not on Ancestry.

Assuming you already know your near family and are trying to find your great great grandparents, and other relatives, Ancestry.com is a good source, especially the family tree sites.
familysearch.org is free and I've found almost as much information there as from ancestry.com. You can also got to rootsweb.com these have been the best 3 of all I've found. You can also go thru graveyard records online if you know where your ancestors are buried, alot of them are now online, also free. You can then go online with the dates on their tombstones and locations where they are buried from there and find them, in census, sometimes in the areas where they last lived, it makes it easier to find them.

My Brother was using it for a long time and it had taken our family tree as far back as the 900 years. I was surprised that Daniel Boone and Pocahontas was part of our family tree. So i would say there pretty good. But the more family members that contribute information the more it is able to find. It is really amazing how spread out the tree is.

It's never too late! One of the greatest rabbis in Jewish history, Rabbi Akiva, only learned the Hebrew alphabet when he was 40. If you want to learn more about Judaism, I would suggest going to your grandparents or someone else on your mother's side of the family that could maybe tell you more about it. If you feel uncomfortable or there's no one approachable, then go to a rabbi in a local synagogue and ask him about it, and he would be more than willing to teach you about all the laws and rules of Judaism. If you ever have any questions that no one's answering, feel free to email me and I'll be happy to do my best.

Before you launch onto the internet or any website, free or fee, start with yourself and work back using the records you already have in your home and in the homes of all your relations...that will get you a great foundation, for free 3- 4 generations and give you a good knowledge of your family and who you are looking for http://familytimeline.webs.com/recordsinyourownhom...
