How much will it cost for 2 people to live in the San Francisco bay area?
My boyfriend and i are considering moving into a studio or one room apartment in the San Fransisco bay area ( on the peninsula along the Cal train line) this summer. We are trying to work out if it is possible on our budget. Can anyone give us some advice, or general numbers on how much it costs a month for two people to live bare minimum in this area?
We are looking for price ideas for:
-Rent
-utilities
-phone bill (shared plan cell phones, no land line)
- we don't need cable, just internet
-public transportation (no car)
-groceries
-laundromat
-and anything you think we may not have thought about!
Help? Anyone?

roughly speaking... the peninsula will cost you at least $1200+ just for rent. if i were you, id check out a map of cities you would live in and go to APARTMENTS.COM From there, you can calculate the rest of your bills. only the two of you know how much you eat, phone time used, utilities used, and how much laundry you do.

A studio will cost around $1000 and a 1-bdrm around $1400. You will have a security deposit, a cleaning deposit and a pet deposit if they allow pets. Landlords usually require your income be two times the rent. If you live in the East Bay instead of the Peninsula it would be cheaper.
I am in the bay area near San Francisco. I pay $50 for gas heating & electric in winter and $25 for electric the rest of the year.
I dont have a cell phone.
Public transit on Cal Train you have to check their website
You will have a washer and dryer in the laundry room in the building.
You have to pay for internet. No cable or satellite TV??
I spend around $250 a groceries for 1 person.

It's very very expensive and it might be better to maybe get an apartment in the East Bay and just take BART to the City every day. A nice place to rent an apartment would be in the Jack London/ Chinatown Area. A great city though, would be Alameda. It's smaller and quaint but really convenient. The thing is, the Bay Area is kinda the place with the largest tax so...

^^ These are very nice but you need to contact them for a price
public transportation to get to San Francisco would be around $12 round trip with bus and BART
The best location would be the Alameda because everything you need is in walking distance. Very safe and the beach is almost across the street depending on which location you decide on. You wont need internet because if you get a coffee at starbucks or borders, it's free. Phone bills can be cheap or expensive depending on what you want. Since it's only for the summer, those prepaid phones arn't so bad. Groceries....How much do you eat? Well there is Southshore shopping center and Park street(like a main street) that has pretty much everything. You have food that can be extravagant; Sushi house literally next to the beach, Burma Superstar(location in SF was too crouded so they opened one on Park-burmese food), and there's simple food like bakeries, panera bread, chipotle. You'll enjoy it in Alameda:)

I live in San Francisco (Pacific Heights specifically) so I don't know if I can be helpful to you, but I will try my best.
-Rent: Studio in my apartment starts at $1850/month.
-Utilities: Cable + Internet : $140/month
-Phone Bill: $90/month (depending on your carrier, data plan, etc)
-I don't use public transportation
-Groceries: About $120/month?
-I have both dryer/washer in my apartment. Therefore, I cannot be much of a help
ETC:
-Your health insurance
-Your 'extra' money to pamper yourselves
-Maybe going out to eat?

I'd advice jumping on craigslist--you'll be able to get a sense of what prices are in any given part of the Bay Area.
