Can I bar registered sex offenders and convicted felons from joining?

I'm trying to get a social group started in my local town, and an interesting question came up during one of our planning discussions tonight. As it stands, our by-laws allow anyone aged 14 and up to join, provided that any minor has parental consent. Due to this, I know that many parents would pull their children out if they knew we allowed felons or sex offenders to join this group, so is it legal to bar these people from joining?

Update:

My primary concern would be the sex offenders, the question just also came up about the convicted felons. Regarding the convicted felons, I should've been more specific. While I'm not going to run a background check on everyone other than running their name through the sex offenders database, what if someone straight out tells us they're a felon? Would they be able to sue or prosecute if we denied them entry because of that?

    It would be legal to bar sex offenders as they would not be allowed near the children anyway but, you would be walking a fine line barring felons and would have to do a background check on every application to enforce it.~~

    It would be legal to bar sex offenders if there are children, but if you start a club who's purpose is to bar convicted felons, then you could be subjected to law suits if there is any benefits to joining the club. You would be like an employer who simply says convicted felons need not apply. Chances are some club who sues these people might target your club. There are loads of these little associations for the purpose of what ever. If there are laws on your state laws books about discrimination of convicted felons, you can bet someone is using it. There is no law that isn't being used.

    First;

    There many Felons out there never were convicted, and there many people out there convicted for no reason!

    Your local Sheriff's office I thought was to inform a ceratain geographical area of sex offenders, I know mine does! They mail/distribute fliers with a picture and basic non personal information of the offender!

    If this group is private with no Government funding, it should be your right as an American to allow/disallow who you wish would be detrimental to your cause!

    Now if you get government funding you have to allow any mass killer or baby rapper to join as our government supports this! The government sees they paid their debit to society. that why they out, and they the same rights as your Dog! OK maybe Cats too, but I thought they Dictate their own world.

    SOoooooooooooooo! I will assume you have rights to allow who you want! If your not seeking government intercession?

    Now one thing you may consider is people join with the open expression of allowing for a background check, you may be surprised of your own family, neighbors and friends.

    But, ther can be a benefit to allowing ex-offenders to talk and help support your group in the why's and the how to prevents and sees

    But, this a shaky ground YOUR group leaders must address!

    And lastly; you may want to talk to a Lawyer , many have a free consultation and many may donate time to encourage/support your cause!

    Source(s): 11From your additional details; I will really suggest you consult with the State Prosecutor fist, they work for YOU. you pay taxes for their services and you demand that bastard/bitch do what your paying them to do! (back to the sex offenders never prosecuted if you catch my drift? YOUR State joined the United States of American and adders to that Constitution FIRST!!!! IF you can not find a patriotic lawyer to support your cause I open my contact and you contact me and I WILL find you a lawyer help you for free! Not some undermining burn your tongue on coffee lawyer that supports a threatening person to society to walk the streets endangering our children
