Should Australia change the National Flag?
Should the Australian Flag be changed? Why, why not? If you think it should be changed, what do you think needs changing?

Yes.
A new flag design can better reflect the values and aspirations of 21st Century Australia than the current flag which reflects through its design and it history the long past society that was Australia when it was an integral part of the former British Empire. The debate is not about being anti-British. It is, simply, pro-Australian.
Due to the gradual process by which independence was achieved, Australia never had the opportunity to raise a new flag at an Independence Day ceremony, symbolically representing the "coming of age" of the nation. Therefore, like Canada which changed its flag in 1965 (whilst retaining HM Queen Elizabeth II as Queen of Canada), Australia needs to reflect its current status as a fully independent country, respectful of its British history, but projecting through its flag an authentic and modern Australian identity.
A national flag is a powerful symbol of the nation and it is important that the flag be truly representative of all Australians. Whilst ANFA claims that the "Stars and Crosses" represent Australia's values and legal traditions, many see only the British Union Jack and associate that part of the flag as representing only the Anglo-Celtic origins of what is now only one part of our multi-cultural society. Australian values go beyond the limited list of the rule of law, parliamentary democracy and the like, that is attributed to British heritage.
The design of the current Australian National Flag is criticised for lacking any distinctive Australian design elements - the Union Jack in the top left corner ("the canton") indicates, in heraldry, that the United Kingdom flag is superior to the other design elements; the Southern Cross is not unique to Australia - it appears on a number of other national flags of countries in the southern hemisphere; and the Commonwealth Star is meaningless to foreigners, unless they are explicitly educated about the meaning of the elements of the Australian flag and many countries include a large star on their flag.

Yes. When we become a republic, which is likely after the Queen dies, I think we should have a new national flag at the same time. The original competition for the current flag required the Union Flag to be in the corner so all designs had that restriction to start with.
A competition for a new flag would have no such restriction. Canada used to have a flag similar to ours with the Union Flag in the corner. The Canadian flag we know today is one of the most easily recognised flags in the world. I would like to see a proper competition for a new flag and the new flag chosen by a plebiscite, possibly at the same time as the referendum to establish the republic. The old flag would be one of the options so if the majority want to keep it they will but it would be good to look to the future with a new head-of-state and a new flag.

Seeing as a second plebiscite for an Australian Republic will be held upon Queen Elizabeth's abdication or death, I believe we should change it when we declare full independence from the UK. In my opinion, it should honour the Aboriginal heritage. If I could choose, I would take the Southern Cross from the current design and place it in the top-right corner of the Aboriginal flag.

i think of if we modify right into a Republic then the union jack area of the flag could circulate yet i've got relatively have been given different issues to rigidity approximately and our contemporary flag would not hardship me. a minimum of it would not as long as that's no longer wrapped around the neck of an offended bogan.

Is Doris really a Brit, she didn`t moan about the weather and immigrants? Australia doesn`t belong to us it belongs to the natives, the Aboriginals. Why not put one on your flag or the only other things Australia is famous for in Britain, Skippy, Dame Edna Everage, Crocodile Dundee,
Fosters lager or Sir Les Patterson the Australian Minister for Culture.
We will never forgive you for inflicting "Neighbours" and "Home and Away" on us, although "Kath and Kim" was some consolation.
Isn`t it time you took Jason Donovan back or did you deport him?
Oh and don`t forget to send a ticket for Rolf Harris, the dozy old fart.
A thumbs down, you didn`t retain the British sense of humour then?

No, God no. I'm a Brit and I'll be offended if you Australians take off the glorious Union Jack. You belong to us and always will, so don't change it!
