you should get lots of wipes, diapers, bottles and burp cloths. You don't want to get to many new born diapers because new borns grow very quickly, johnson & johnson is always a good brand to use. Shampoos tear free (i know I always get nervous using shapoos unless they're tear free) sensitive skin lotions. You can never have to many of any of these things wal mart have a nice brand of diapers also. Oh and it's always handy to have hand sanitizer around for everyone who wants to hold or touch the baby also congrads on being a uncle.!

Don't go crazy here. Baby powder is not needed. Talcum powder is actually not recommended as it can choke the baby during use. Baby oil...never needed it. I have a bottle of the Johnson's Baby Oil Gel that I never used once. Waste of money. Nail clippers...keep them in the top drawer of the baby's dresser and you'll never lose them. You can get a little nursery kit with nail clippers, thermometer, bulb syringe, medicine dropper...and it all comes in a little pouch. Just keep it all together and you'll never lose the clippers.

Things that are helpful are baby facecloths and towels, vaseline for a bum barrier cream before baby is on solids, there is nothing in a baby's bowel movement that is going to cause a bum rash, vaseline is cheap and does the job well...that's all I used).

Personally, I we had been given Johnson's baby wash and lotions, but only used them a few times and switched to Baby Aveeno hair and body wash, and a tube of lotion because my daughter was breaking out from the regular Johnson's. That's all we've used. One of the wash lasts about 3-4 months, we use it sparingly.

Do NOT buy pacifiers. Let the parents decide that, especially if mom is breastfeeding.

Baby will need a hair brush set.

And even though I would never buy up diapers in advance because you never know what size the baby will be for how long...wipes never go out of style or size. ;-)

You might want to consider getting a bottle of Gripe Water...any brand will do, even drug store generic brand is just as effective as anything. Ovol drops were also my friend at around 2 weeks, when my baby had a lot of gas from improper latch.

stay away from baby powder and oil, some people use the oil, some don't. Most doctors tell you to stay away from powder (baby powder has fragrance that irritates babies!). For when baby comes home, get some newborn wipes (softer than normal wipes), diaper cream is a must, extra nail clippers are a great idea. Another thing that is really helpful is an infant medicine dispencer, it lets you put a tsp of medicine in and they drink it like it's a bottle. In the beginning (1st 5 -12 months), lots of onesies in lots of sizes. Gerber is sized small.

I'm a first-time mom of an 10.5 month old baby girl. Here are some of my favorite things I've received over the last year that are good for any new parent.

    1.) must-have book

    http://www.amazon.com/Baby-411-Clear-Answers-Advic...

2.) super cute splat mat (for when they start solids with the baby, comes in different colors)

    http://www.amazon.com/Sugar-Booger-Numbers-Feeding...

3.) a real white noise machine. it's great because it keeps the baby's room quiet, so she can't hear us watching TV, doing dishes, etc. after she goes to bed

    http://www.amazon.com/Marpac-SleepMate-980A-Electr...

4.) Happiest Baby on the Block DVD - Short DVD, but taught me how to soothe my newborn. I was totally clueless before this DVD, and it was SUPER helpful!

    http://www.amazon.com/Happiest-Baby-Block-DVD/dp/0...

5.) Another book... read the review all both books and the DVD above - they are staples!! This book starts off boring, but was SO key in helping me establish good sleep habits with my baby early on... She's a great sleeper!

    http://www.amazon.com/Healthy-Sleep-Habits-Happy-C...

6.) Wet bag (for storing a dirty diaper in your diaper bag when you're on the run and don't have access to a garbage can)

    http://www.amazon.com/Itzy-Ritzy-Happened-Large-Bu...

7.) All docs will want a rectal read on a thermometer. I was uncomfortable with the idea, but this thermometer is designed so that you can't accidentally go too far. ...when you're a new parent, you find yourself worrying about every little detail sometimes! ..is it far enough in.. is it too far in... ??

    http://www.amazon.com/Vicks-V934-Baby-Rectal-Therm...

8.) My baby loves this little peacock. It's cute and crinkly. Babies love crinkly stuff with bright colors!

    http://www.amazon.com/Lamaze-Jacques-Peacock-Color...

9.) Crinkly soft books are fun. We have this, and my daughter loves the crinkly pages and the different textures of the tails. It's great to take in the car bcz she can play with it for a while.

    http://www.amazon.com/Jellycat-BN444J-Jungly-Tails...

10.) Not to keep giving you book ideas, but sometimes referrals are what help new parents know which books are worth getting. You can verify my recommendations by reading the amazon reviews. My mom got me this book, and I loved it. It helped me know what may baby is up to and give me ideas on how to play with her. It breaks it into four stages, 0-3 months, 3-6 mothes, 6-9 months and 9+.

I'm sure there are other recommendations, but these things come to mind when I think of some of the favorite things I've received.

I think there are a lot of great toy manufacturers out there. When it comes to little creature thingies, I like Jellie Cat and Manhattan Toys. Lamaze is good too. Melissa and Doug make really nice puzzles and wood toys. But Fischer Price and all the other big brands do a great job too. I like some of those smaller brands, but the big brands really know what they're doing too. It's hard to go wrong when it comes to toys! :)
