Scholars: What is the true origin of satan?
I know that the book of genesis only mentions a serpent and the reader is supposed to interpret this character as the devil, but I have also heard that satan was supposed to have been the highest ranking angel who wanted to be god for a day, so god cast him out.
I am not a believer. I am just curious about where this story of "the morning star" came from.

I had to research this a bit and found something very interesting. The article in full will be found in the 'source link' below.
"Lucifer makes his appearance in the fourteenth chapter of the Old Testament book of Isaiah, at the twelfth verse, and nowhere else: "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!"
The first problem is that Lucifer is a Latin name. So how did it find its way into a Hebrew manuscript, written before there was a Roman language? To find the answer, I consulted a scholar at the library of the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati. What Hebrew name, I asked, was Satan given in this chapter of Isaiah, which describes the angel who fell to become the ruler of hell?

Satan is not Adam or any other person but an enemy of God. The serpent was Satan along with other names like the red dragon etc. He is a spirit that have fallen from grace then became a serpent that tricked Eve then Accuser who accuse Job and in heaven, he was Satan when he made army to fight God. Also the book will be translated by other people and they will give it their own name like Lucifer wich means Bright Star, Satan means enemy, snake wich means a crafty sneaky person.

'Satan', is not a name. It is an adjective. serpent is adjective. Morning star or light bearer is also adjective. None of these are the name of the person, who became satan/serpent.
That man is ADAM. It is never called an angel.
Just because of the word, 'cherub', people mistakenly think this means an angel. but God said to him, both in Eze 28 and Isa 14, that you are a MAN.
It was Adam. Adam, was at first glorified, and this is why he was called a cherub. He was the COVERING for the people. But when he failed, disobeyed God and went bad, God brought up another covering, which is the other Son, Jesus.
After Adam's disobedience and going to a carnal mind, (that serpent)...God then clothed him in skin = which is this MORTAL DUST BODY.
He is no longer a cherub, but a beast. 1Peter and Jude.

God created him sometime during creation. He was the archangel Lucifer, the angel of music. He tried to make himself God for whatever reason. he was cast out of heaven with a number of angels, probably millions. They now rule the earth.
