Because the classification of species did not exist way back then and there wasn't much drive to explore the world's flora and fauna for the sake of exploring.

In recent times we have made the choice to classify the bat as a mammal.
Maybe God classes it different.
In recent times we have made the choice to classify sex outside of marriage as ok.
Maybe God classes it "sin".
