When you are greedy enough to let them substantially raise the bet after you have won a few games
Although this is your fault for being greedy
Keep the bets level and at a comfortable amount that you can handle and know when to quit by setting limits on the amount that you can afford to lose
I generally try to find the worst player in the bar to bet - Sounds like common sense but you'll be surprised how many people want to try to beat the best in the bar - No future in that

When the opponent seems more interested in the money than the competition. A good hustler will never be detected, because hustling can be a dangerous game. There is a big difference between being hustled and being conned, even though they are generally the same thing. The easiest hustle to spot is when 2 players are working together. One player will be shooting around with you to befriend you. He/she will point out a "stranger" and suggest getting into a ring game with the "stranger", like a three-way game of 9-ball. This is a game that has 3 players. The player that pockets the 5-ball will get paid from the other 2 players, and the player that pockets the 9-ball will get paid by the other 2 players. For example it would be $2 on the 5-ball and $5 on the 9-ball. The player being hustled (you) has very little chance of making any money because the player who befriended you is really working with the "stranger" to team up against you. They will sometimes allow you to get a shot at the 5-ball, but rarely the 9-ball. It's a game of 2 against one where you aren't aware you are the "one". Whenever your "friend" pockets the 5-ball or the 9-ball you think half that money is yours, but I guarantee you that the stranger pockets most of the 9-balls. The law of averages are not in your favor. Most people think a hustler is a player who plays poorly until you make a wager on the table, but those "hustlers" aren't real hustlers. So, the best way to tell if you are being hustled or not is to keep a close eye on your money. Good luck!

A complete stranger, maybe. However, even then I never had any problem picking up on it, even when I was just starting out. However, the hardest hustle to pick up on, would be you being the banker/backer of a player and he be in "cahoots" with the opponent.......being in a strange place, would also be harder. I hang around one place mostly and aware of all of the "players" but on strange territory would make it a lot harder.....I have never been a money player, but if it feels or the bet makes me feel tempted, then it is probably a hustle!
