    Throughout history the x has been used to mark that something is there and unknown. Like pirate maps. :P Maybe a connection between the historical usage for unknown figures in maps and in mathematics?

    hmmm.its not always 'X'.u can take any variable.and by the way,'x' is not unknown.you need to solve the sum and then u'll always find it known.
