Why do shows "look" like they're filmed differently compared to the 90's?

I was watching an episode of Law & Order: SVU and I noticed the old Law & Order episodes looked grittier. The SVU episodes look as if your sitting in the room with the actors and I dont mean that in a good way. The coloring is overly warm and there's no camera shake like in the old ones. What's different about today's filming techniques from 10 years ago?

Back in the 90's television shows were filmed with cameras using real film. Now shows are filmed with digital video cameras and subjected to a digital process called "Filmitization" to give it a theatrical look.

better high quality cameras, more cameras for different views taken on shot in different positions... i cant think of anything else... oh yeah and hd tv makes it look more "crisp"
