What can be cooked with a kettle/hot water?

OK, so I work in a homelessness service. A lot of clients of mine, enter Crisis Care which means that they end up in a motel. These are really cheap and kind of not somewhere where people want to be. There is a further problem - many clients report that they have to spend all of their money (which isn't a lot) on takeaway food - as they can't cook in the room (yes, they do know about hot meals at various spots provided by various charities - but often dont have transport). Anyhows.... the rooms usually just have a kettle in them. So, cooking choices are very limited. I'm wanting to create a bit of a menu of ideas for families in Crisis Care accommodation that they can make - with the only available thing to use being hot water. I know about two minute noodles and rice, but that is it.

You can get boil in the bag meals from tons of places, also the rice doesnt have to be on its own, add some lime and chopped vegetable to it, boil them all up and add a bit of sauce like chopped tomotoes or black bean sauce and youve got a lovely meal.

In a situation such as that, canned foods can be very useful. Many cheap canned foods like beans/vegetables can be eaten cold, or warmed sufficiently by submerging the can in a pan of hot water. Canned meat/fish on crackers is a great source of inexpensive protein. Condensed soups can also often be found cheap.

It might seem an extravagance, but it is possible to purchase a slow cooker from the likes of Argos for less than £12.00. With it it is possible to make all kinds of soups and stews. £15.00 will buy a gas camping stove. The savings from not having to eat out every meal should make it economically viable. When I was living rough I bought a Hibatchi style barbecue but you would need to be outdoors to use that.

Cous cous, you can buy flavoured ones in packets, you just pour enough boiling water over to cover it and leave it to soak in for 5 minutes.

Fresh pasta (not dried) just needs to be simmered for a few minutes so you could just leave it in a bowl for a few minutes and then drain.

There are lots of versions of cup a soups. You can also heat up tins by placing them in a bowl of boiling water and leaving a bit longer than you would in a saucepan.

I cant really think of any more.

Pot Noodle's , cup of soups , instant sauces like curry sauce and gravy added to some cold chicken & some instant mash would make quite a nice meal in mins

You could try instant soups. There are many flavours available and can be quite filling if served with bread (especially wholemeal). For protein serve cold ready-cooked meat or fish. Tuna sandwich can be very filling and is nutritious especially with wholemeal bread. For vegetables suggest salads. Fruit for sweet items, tea or coffee to drink.
