Would an US version of Pokemon B&W work with my DS lite?
Basically, I'm from Australia and I know the games will be insanely overpriced when they're released here ($70 for ONE game?!).
I've heard that the new games will be region-locked for DSi's and 3DS's when they're released. So this is a bit of a stupid question, but I wanted to know your opinions/knowledge on the matter.
So, is it worth me buying the games from overseas?

You wouldn't have a problem with Pokémon Black or White working on your Nintendo DS Lite and actually it's not the games that are region locked, it's the DSi and 3DS that are region locked.

Yes it would. The Black/White Versions are only region locked for Nintendo Dsi/DsiXL systems.
So Yes it would be worth buying. If you're lucky, you can probably get one over eBay/amazon for around $50 plus shipping.

It is totally worth it. In the US it is $35-40.I am going to get it too on my DS lite.It would be more enjoyable to have 3D game, but who needs 3D? If you want to get a 3D, then it will cost hundreds of dollars.
I think it is worth it to buy it.
