Yes, he's suggesting a proper replacement.

The size is appropriate, even though the plumbing inside is smaller.

Copper TUBING is the best thing to use for entering a building.

Water piping is sized for the demand and available pressure. If you have a 6 bathroom monster house a half-mile away from the street, 1" would be pretty lite. If you have a fairly 'average' house with average water pressure, it's probably fine.

I've never run anything smaller than 1" into a house. 3/4" might be ok in some cases, but the cost difference in materials is negligible and the labor is about the same.

I would not try to repair a galvanized water service. It's got to be in the neighborhood of 50 years old. It's done. If you repair the leak, you'll likely just get another one soon.

And take a look inside the old galvanized when it's removed. It's sure to be clogged with 50 years of rust.

If your house has 1 kitchen and less than 3 full and 2 half baths 3/4 copper in 1 1/2 plastic conduit is more than sufficient

Patrice, If you had a water service break (it was probably just a leak) but yes, if you currently have a 1 inch galvanized water service, you COULD replace it with a 1 in copper line. But, I doubt there is any need to replace the whole water service other that to end up giving your plumber a whole bunch more money. Just tell him that you want him to repair the break or leak and that's it! I doubt that there is any need to have do anything more. Good luck.

!" - 1.5" is grate and copper is the best for durability in my opinion. Perhaps the new flex ablele plastics if you live in freezing temps so it would hav more ability to expand and contract. If he wants to use SOFT ROLLED copper refuse it. Some times guys like to use it as it just rolls out in one piec and hav to cut and soldre.....saves a lot of time, but it is a much softer material and subjest to stress from tree roots and friction by rocks and such, soft rolled is for undrer concreet slabs to be seamless.

use copper or pex,a fairly new plastic pipe that will handle alot of abuse, heat, cold, very flexible and strong.
