What is the difference between ATMEL mega32l microcontroller and ATMEL AT89C51?

The biggest difference is the amount of internal memory. The ATmega32 has 32k of flash and 4k of RAM. The AT89C51 has 4k and 1/8 k. Also the AT89C51 is not recommended for new designs.

As for other features, they both have timers, I/O, and UARTs. Check the datasheets if you need something particular.

Both have free GCC based compilers (WinAVR and SDCC).

Also, the ATmega have EEPROM which is like parameter memory. If the user selects preferences like frequency, volume, temperature, etc. they can be saved in EEPROM and will survive a loss of power.
