What is a tree with reddish purple buds and dainty pink flowers?

I'm perplexed. I just moved into a new house in the high desert. There are 2 trees in the back yard that I suspect are fruit trees. Perhaps its a cherry, apricot, peach, or something like that. The branches kind of point upward to the sky and this week I noticed thousands of reddish purple buds on them. Some of those buds have opened into delicate pink flowers. Whatever it is, they are pretty.

Any ideas on identifying them or how to identify them before they (hopefully) fruit would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

It sounds like cherry to me too. They have upward growing branches and are covered with beautiful pink flowers in spring.

    Enjoy them!

It sounds like a red cherry tree, if you posted a photo then it would be easier for me to tell. Anyway, red cherry trees are early trees and tend to show leaves early March.
